A person has died after being hit by a train between Darlington and Newcastle earlier today (July 5).
British Transport Police confirmed they were called to reports of a casualty on the tracks at Chester-le-Street station at around 11:31am on Friday.
A person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have said the incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report for the coroner is being prepared.
“Officers were called to Chester le Street railway station at around 11.31am today (5 July) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
