A train driver was reportedly spat at and punched in the head after trying to kick a group of fare dodgers off a Darlington service.

It happened at about 9pm on Friday, June 7 on the Saltburn to Darlington train.

The British Transport Police said the driver told the group of fare evaders to leave the train when it got to Thornaby.

But as they alighted one of the men is said to have spat in the driver’s face and another punched him in the head.

Officers investigating the incident have released pictures of people who were in the area and may have information to assist their investigation.

A police spokesperson said: “Anyone who recognises him or has any other information, is asked to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 714 of 7 June.

“Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
