Police have removed an item from a home in Hartlepool after reports of a war-time explosive device.

Emergency services put up a cordon in Spalding Road while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team inspected the item.

It has now been safely removed.

The police have thanked locals for their understanding and patience.

A Hartlepool Police spokesperson said: "An earlier cordon in the Spalding Road area of Hartlepool has now been stood down.

"A cordon was in place for a short time whilst officers and colleagues from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended an incident whereby a suspected war-time device was located in a property.

"The item has now been safely removed by EOD colleagues.

"We would like to thank residents and members of the public for their patience whilst the incident was brought to a safe conclusion."
