Speaking after the result announcement, she said: “It’s an absolute privilege and I will never forget my responsibility. It’s been an honour and I’m incredibly proud of all the communities and villages across the city.
“People across the City of Durham and the country have voted for change. After 14 years of austerity policies that have made life incredibly difficult for many families and a cost-of-living crisis that people have found extremely difficult to be able to survive and pay their balls, all the while the rich have been getting richer.
“I hope tonight is the start of the end of all of this, and hopefully we will have a Labour government that will offer hope to families and communities.”
