There were 40,792 total applicable votes and a turnout of 57.79%.

The landslide result saw the Labour MP win with a majority of 11,757 votes. Reform candidate Mark Belch came second with 7,374 votes. The Liberal Democrats came third, with the Conservatives fourth.

Speaking after the result announcement, she said: “It’s an absolute privilege and I will never forget my responsibility. It’s been an honour and I’m incredibly proud of all the communities and villages across the city.

“People across the City of Durham and the country have voted for change. After 14 years of austerity policies that have made life incredibly difficult for many families and a cost-of-living crisis that people have found extremely difficult to be able to survive and pay their balls, all the while the rich have been getting richer.

“I hope tonight is the start of the end of all of this, and hopefully we will have a Labour government that will offer hope to families and communities.”
