A suspected burglar was arrested in just five minutes last night after an eagle-eyed passer-by spotted a man smashing the window of a business in Darlington.
An eyewitness contacted Durham Police and the control room immediately dispatched officers to the scene in Whessoe Road.
A 9.25pm – just five minutes later – an officer had arrested a 31-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of burglary.
Darlington Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Dean Haythornthwaite said: “This is a great example of officers and residents working together to keep their communities safe.
“I would like to thank the caller whose vigilance allowed for officers to identify, locate and arrest the suspect so quickly.
“If you see something that doesn’t look quite right, please contact us.”
The man remains in police custody while enquiries are ongoing.
