An alleged drink driver has been arrested after a car collided with a patient transport ambulance in Middlesbrough. 

Officers were called to Ladgate Lane on Tuesday morning after a Peugeot 208 reportedly crashed into pedestrian barriers before colliding with a vehicle. 

The passenger in the ambulance, a 62-year-old man, suffered fractured ribs and was taken to James Cook University Hospital.

Meanwhile, another man, a 44-year-old man also travelling in the ambulance, suffered a wound to his knee and was also taken to hospital for treatment.

Cleveland Police has confirmed that the driver of the Peugeot, a 45-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

A full statement from the force said: "Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision on Ladgate Lane in Middlesbrough.

"The collision happened around 2:40am this morning, Tuesday, July 2, involving a Peugeot 208 which was reported to have collided with pedestrian barriers before colliding with a patient transport ambulance.
