Officers were called to Tees Barrage last night after reports that a man entered the river.
Cleveland Police has confirmed there was a police presence by the River Tees in Stockton as a man, aged in his 30s, is believed to have gone into the water.
Attempts were being made to locate and rescue the man. This news comes as volunteers from the Tees River Rescue charity confirm they have been deployed.
An eyewitness at the scene later revealed that a body had been recovered from the water, but this is yet to be confirmed by emergency services.
Reports suggest a cordon has been erected at the scene - although this has not been confirmed.
The Northern Echo has contacted the North East Ambulance Service for more information.
