Tributes have been paid to a "beloved" great-grandad who died after a tragic Middlesbrough crash.

David Hodgson sadly died after a one-vehicle crash on Marton Road, near the James Cook University Hospital, on Tuesday afternoon.

The 87-year-old’s family has now released a heartbreaking tribute to him, saying: "It is with deepest sadness that we announce the sudden loss of David.

“He’s a beloved father of three, grandfather of two, great-grandfather of two and a much-respected member of the local community. He will be greatly missed.”

Police closed off the busy Middlesbrough road around 1pm following the incident, with pictures online showing a collision investigation unit at the scene.

Cleveland Police later confirmed that the driver suffered a medical episode at the wheel while reversing out of a driveway, and collided with a tree.

An 81-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the car, was also taken to hospital and remained in a serious but stable condition on Wednesday - but no update on her condition has been provided.
