A “fantastic” family-run pub in Teesside praised for going the “extra mile” has been named a finalist at the Great British Pub Awards 2024.

The Last Post Memorial Bar in Thornaby has been shortlisted for ‘Best Community Pub’ sponsored by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, among the likes of Guy Earl of Warwick in Kent and The Swan in Windsor.

However, The Last Post Memorial Bar isn’t the only North East pub to be nominated in the awards as The Kirkstyle Inn and Sportsman's Rest in Brampton, Northumberland is a finalist for ‘Best Country Pub’ and ‘Best Pub for Food’.

The Great British Pub Awards revealed after receiving an “incredible” number of entries for this year's awards, the experts have whittled it down to the “very best the nation has to offer”.

Great British Pub Awards 2024 finalists for ‘Best Community Pub’

The other shortlisted pubs joining The Last Post Memorial Bar in its prestigious ‘Best Community Pub’ category are:

  • Almondsbury Creative - Bristol, South Gloucester
  • Guy Earl of Warwick - Welling, Kent
  • Royal Oak Radcliffe - Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire
  • The Kings Arms - Horsham, West Sussex
  • The Last Post Memorial Bar - Thornaby, Teesside
  • The Swan - Windsor, Berkshire

On The Last Post Memorial Bar's Tripadvisor page, a review by one recent visitor said: “Fantastic family run pub, staff are always welcoming, Landlady always goes the extra mile and has a heart of gold, always putting others before herself. Great value for money.”

Someone else added: “An unbelievable experience, such a fantastic place and the staff were so accommodating.

“The Landlady Mrs Julie Cooper…. All I can say is what a wonderful person she is supporting veterans around the world . She does this with a fantastic support staff that makes everyone fell welcome.

“100% and in the words of the Terminator … I Will be Back!. Keep up the good work.”
