The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of thunderstorms for the North East today.

Heavy rain and storms are set to move throughout the region late this morning and continue until around 10pm on Saturday night.

The warning states: “Slow moving thunderstorms and heavy showers may cause some disruption to travel and outdoor activities.

“There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

“Delays to train services are possible, probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes, and some short term loss of power and other services is likely.

“Some flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures.”
