A McDonald's restaurant has re-opened after a car crashed into it before leaving the scene "at speed" in County Durham early this morning.

The vehicle is believed to be a Subaru Forester and left a trail of destruction after leaving the A167 road and crashing into the McDonald's restaurant at the Thinford roundabout, near Ferryhill, at about 1am on Friday (June 14).

The car crashed through a metal rail, through seating and finally into a window and wall with pictures showing a significant amount of damage.

However, the restaurant has re-opened and is said to be doing a "roaring trade" albeit partially boarded up with a skip in the seating area.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident as they appeal for witnesses.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "Police received reports of a collision at the McDonald's restaurant on Thinford Roundabout this morning (June 14) at around 1am.
