Two years since petrol prices hit all-time highs of £2 a litre, it feels the cost of filling up the tank will never fall back to levels seen before the pandemic.

The average cost of buying a litre of unleaded is currently 146.28p, according to the RAC, while the average price of a litre of diesel stands at 151.51p and is expected to rise further.

The motoring organisation believes that prices should fall.

Two years ago the Echo told how motorists were forking out £2 a litre at motorway forecourts in the region. Businesses said they were struggling with increasing fuel prices.
