Vandals have felled an 80-year-old sycamore tree on the edge of a County Durham village prompting a police investigation.

The tree along the Hudeshope Beck, which flows into the River Tees, at Middleton-in-Teesdale, is believed to have been illegally felled on Saturday, May 18.

"The tree, which stood behind The Forresters Bar and Restaurant, in Middleton-in-Teesdale, is believed to have been illegally felled at around 7pm on May 18.

"Officers attended a short time later and found the tree laid in a field, partially blocking a beck."
