Searching for a classic country retreat that won’t shatter your bank account?

A spa in County Durham which offers a “thermal spectrum of facilities” including an aromatic tepidarium and icicle-filled igloo has been revealed as one of the UK’s most affordable.

We all love to pamper ourselves from time to time but often it’s the cost that holds us back from booking life-changing spa experiences.

Yet at Rockliffe Hall near Darlington, you can treat yourself or a loved one for under £100.

The wellness hotspot is featured on a newly curated list by global travel publisher Condé Nast Traveller (quite an achievement).

Condé Nast Traveller commented on its latest spa guide: “Truly great spas aren’t always as expensive as you might think. Plenty of hotels offer day experiences to non-guests who can maximise the health benefits of a hot-cold circuit, swim laps, and relax in a hot tub without stumping up to stay overnight.

“The best prices are often half days (or evenings) during the week – and in many places, treatments can then be added on top for those happy to spend a little more. Here’s our pick of the best spas in the UK to book for under £100.”

Why is Rockliffe Hall among the UK’s most affordable spas in 2024?

Condé Nast Traveller explained: “No classic country retreat would be complete without a spa and Rockliffe Hall, just outside Darlington, has the full thermal spectrum of facilities – from an aromatic tepidarium and detoxifying infrared room to an icicle-filled igloo and foot spa with bursts of hot and cold bubbles.

“Arrive at 5pm for the Spa by Sunset, four hours to zone out and properly relax. The package includes access to the tranquil spa garden (the best spot as the sun sinks) and for an extra £25, you can upgrade with the Mud Rasul experience, slathering on a salt scrub and Dead Sea mask to nourish the skin.”

On Tripadvisor, Rockliffe Hall has also been highly praised by visitors and has been given a 4.5/5 rating from 3,756 reviews.

One person who enjoyed a spa day with a friend posted: “Lovely facilities, we also had a treatment included in the package (we booked ‘time for tranquillity’). I chose to have a facial which lasted an hour and was absolutely amazing, I didn’t realise the facial also included a brief massage of hands, arms, neck/chest, and feet too which was a nice surprise. It was so relaxing and Eva was so friendly and made me feel so comfortable.

“My friend had the body scrub and she said that was amazing. We had food at the Nu Spa after which was really nice. Will definitely come back!”

Another who attended for a hen do wrote: “Such a beautiful place and just an amazing experience. Took my best friend for there for her hen day and we were made to feel so welcome. Spa, swimming, massages and fabulous food. We will definitely be back, as we had such a great day. Thank you.”
