Revised plans to close a major A-road in North Yorkshire for two months have been put forward by National Highways, as works move closer to starting. 

The road agency has confirmed that the A66 Trunk Road between Scotch Corner and Hartforth will be closed in part from July 1 for two months.

According to Highways, the stretch of road will be closed - but will be in stages to allow drivers to not be fully impacted by the roadworks. 

On the North Yorkshire Council roadworks map, the closure is listed between July 1 and September 9 - and lists out the sections that will be closed.

The description of the work reads: "Winston Cross Roads to Hartwoth Junction, Hartforth Junction to end of Dual Carriageway, Scotch Corner to Sedbury Layby Exit, Sedbury Layby - Sedbury Home Farm, Sedbury Home Farm to Melsonby Cross Roads, Melsonby to Winston Cross Roads, Scotch Corner Roundabout, Scotch Corner Roundabout, Leeming to Barton, A66 Laybys."

In the description section of the works, Highways says: "A66 eastbound and westbound Hartforth Junction to Scotch Corner carriageway closures, lane closures for resurfacing area scheme."

Other measures include:

  • From Monday, July 1, we are resurfacing the A66 westbound between Scotch Corner and Hartforth. This work will be carried out over around two months in total.
  • To carry this out safely, the A66 westbound will be closed on weeknights between 8pm and 6am. This work will be carried out in phases.
  • During the day, a temporary 50mph speed limit will remain in place.
  • Traffic travelling westbound will be diverted up to junction 58 of the A1(M) to use the A68, and A688 with additional signed diversions for HGVs to avoid the weight restriction in Barnard Castle at Abbey Bridge.
  • Signed diversions will be in place to maintain access for residents.
