New signs have gone up outside Stockton's upcoming JD Gyms.

The major chain has taken over the former TruGym at Preston Farm and will be opening a “world-class” fitness facility there this summer.

JD Gyms Stockton South is set to feature hundreds of pieces of cardio, strength, and functional fitness equipment as well as a free weights zone and saunas in the luxury changing rooms.

Works have been ongoing at the the 18,000 sq ft unit for several months, with a JD Gyms logo recently being placed on the unit’s front alongside other gym-related images.

The firm - which is part of JD Sports Fashion group - submitted proposals to take over the unit last year, after TruGym closed the doors suddenly back in May 2023.

The application said JD Gyms had agreed to take over the empty premises - so long as extra parking spaces could be added.

Opening in 2013, TruGym closed just months after it increased its fees, which was blamed on the fallout from Covid and “extortionate energy price rises."

The new “state-of-the-art” facility will host hundreds of classes a month once open, including its bespoke HIIT bootcamp concept aptly titled JD Burn.

Fitness fanatics will also be able to capitalise on the venue's Eleiko functional zone, sled track, and a dedicated glute area.

The 24/7 gym will have plenty of free parking on site and is located just metres away from a new Starbucks drive-thru, which opened at the end of April.

JD Gyms already boasts several locations across the North East, including in Darlington, Hartlepool, Sunderland, Washington, and on Tyneside.

An opening date has not yet been confirmed - but bosses previously said it would be throwing open the doors in summer 2024.

CEO of JD Gyms, Alun Peacock, previously said: “Stockton-on-Tees is a fantastic location for us, and we're pleased to be able to offer people in the area a brand-new fitness facility after the closure of TruGym.

“We’re excited to be opening a world-class gym that’s unlike anything else that the area currently offers.”
