A North East council have warned drivers they could be fined as it looks to crack down on ‘dangerous’ and ‘inconsiderate’ parking outside schools.
Middlesbrough Council have said motorists could be fined £100 and be given a three-point penalty on their licence if they are found to have parked on marked crossings outside schools.
They also warned failure to stop for a school crossing patrol officer could result in a fine of up to £1,000, and three penalty points.
This comes after photos taken on Eastbourne Road, just outside St Edward’s School, showed vehicles parked on the markings.
Councillor Peter Gavigan said: “Parking like this near schools is selfish and inconsiderate, and there’s no excuse for it.
“The markings near schools are there for a reason, and parking on top of them puts lives at risk.
“I’d urge drivers to park responsibly and legally – if you don’t you will be prosecuted.”
Road safety chiefs have said ‘inconsiderate drivers’ continue to put ‘lives at risk’ by parking on zig-zag and double yellow lines.
The council added lollipop staff often report feeling scared to perform their role with drivers ‘failing to stop,’ while ‘inconsiderate’ parking decreases visibility and increases the risk of an accident.
A council spokesperson said: “Drivers are again being warned that they will be fined for parking dangerously outside Middlesbrough's schools.
“These photos were taken on Eastbourne Road but the problem is widespread outside schools across the town.
“Road safety chiefs say inconsiderate drivers are continuing to put lives at risk by parking on zig-zag and double yellow lines.
“In addition to the risk posed to pupils, pedestrians and other road users, the culprits face fines, penalty points and even driving bans.

“The alert from Middlesbrough Council’s Road Safety team comes with a reminder that stopping on zig-zag lines outside a school carries a fine of up to £100.
“Stopping on white zig-zags (near a marked crossing) can lead to a fine and up to three penalty points, and failure to stop for a school crossing patrol officer attracts a fine of up to £1,000 and three penalty points.
“Lollipop staff regularly report feeling scared to step out onto the road due to drivers failing to stop, while inconsiderate and illegal parking near schools and crossing points reduces visibility and increases the risk of accidents.”
