A person has been hit by a train between Darlington and Newcastle.

The incident on the East Coast Mainline between the two locations happened on Sunday (June 9) at about 10.30pm.

Emergency services were called to the train line after concerns for someone's welfare - with train companies confirming that someone had been hit by a train.

An LNER spokesperson said: "#LNERUpdate It is with great sadness we report a person has been hit by a train between Darlington and Newcastle, services are subject to delays when passing in the surrounding area."

Train lines were closed for several hours to allow emergency services to work at the scene.

The East Coast Main Line is now fully open and all train operators are running a full schedule of trains.

The British Transport Police have been contacted for a comment.
