The Northern Echo has now launched its Best Chippy 2024 competition - and your favourite chippy needs your support!
Voting is now open - but while we wait to find out who will be crowned as the best chippy for 2024, we're featuring one of the finalists every day for the next ten days.
Today it is the turn of North Road Fish Bar, in 158 North Road, Darlington, owned by Dilawar 'Dil' and Asha Fingh.
Asha said: "This is our fourth year here. It was during lockdown that we decided we needed a new venture, and we took it on.
"My partner was a taxi driver before this, so it was very new for us – but during Covid there wasn’t a lot of work so we needed to make a change.
"It was a closed shop, and over time we furbished it how we wanted it and we got into it quite quickly. My partner does the cooking and I’m front of house, so we make a good team.
Dilawar, or ‘Dil’ as everyone knows him, does all the preparation himself.
Asha said: "He has his own methods and secrets to make his batter. We have amazing suppliers and always try to buy quality products because they taste better.
"We have lots of regular customers and know their orders – we’re so thankful for their support."
