A man has been left with a broken jaw after a cashpoint gang attack in Ingleby Barwick. 

The incident took place at the Tesco store, on Myton Way, when a man aged in his 50s was using the cash machine.

A group of four males - believed to be aged 16 to 18 - were in the car park at the time playing with a football before a verbal altercation occurred. Two people assaulted the male by punching or kicking him, causing him to fall to the ground.

He was taken to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, where he remains requiring surgery for a broken jaw. 

Cleveland Police has now issued an appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or may have more information. The force said: "Police are appealing after a man was assaulted resulting in a broken jaw in Ingleby Barwick. 

"The incident happened between 00:10am and 00:20am on Tuesday 4th June, after a man aged in his fifties used the cash point at Tesco on Myton Way.

"A group of four males were in the car park, they had a football with them and are believed to be teenagers approximately 16-18 years old.

"A verbal altercation followed, then two of the group proceeded to assault the male by punching or kicking him, causing him to fall to the floor.

"The man attended James Cook University Hospital, where he remains whilst requiring surgery for a broken jaw. Any witnesses to the incident or anyone with information, are asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting reference number SE24104289.
