Plans have been lodged to transform Wynyard Hall’s lakeside spa.

Bosses at the Grade II listed complex want to demolish part of the existing glasshouse - which is ”in a very poor condition” - and have an “extensive refurbishment and extension.”

If approved, the plans would see the existing ground floor building extended and introduce a new-look outdoor area, with features including a new infinity pool, two barrel saunas, and fire pit seating areas alongside hot tubs.

It would also allow for a new-build upper-level building with treatment and manicure rooms and even a relaxation terrace for maximum relaxation and pampering.

GT3 Architects, on behalf of Cameron Hall Developments, has created the proposals for the new extended spa facilities as part of a listed building consent application, submitted to Stockton Council back in May.

The spa is located downhill from Wynyard Hall on the water’s edge and overlooks the lake, providing visitors with views back up towards the building.

‘Wonderful’ opportunity to ‘enhance existing offering’

The striking proposals include a cafe area to accommodate 40 covers on the lower floor by the lake, with access to an outdoor seating area.

This floor - named as Level 00 on documents - would also feature changing rooms for a capacity of 40 people, with indoor spa facilities including a herbal sauna, steam room, frigidarium (a cold bath), experience showers, a salt therapy room, and plunge pools.

Outdoors, the spa would feature two hot tubs, an ice plunge pool, an infinity pool, two barrel saunas, fire pit seating areas, and external terraced areas across two levels.

Meanwhile on the upper floor, Level 01 - plans show a manicure area including four stations and two pedicure seats, and a relaxation room for 10 people located alongside relaxation rooms.

There would also be six single treatment rooms and one double treatment room, with two of the seven rooms set to include showers.

The firm is hoping to utilise the existing road and spa car park, which will be expanded to accommodate 16 car parking spaces.

Glasshouse ‘inappropriate’ for internal spa usage

The proposal to demolish the glasshouse is being put forward due to it being “inappropriate” for any internal spa usage.

The building is an uninsulated pavilion structure - with the external walls of the ground floor being in need of both repair and thermal improvements.

The key principles of demolition are to retain the ground floor wall and floor structure, where it can be suitable for reuse.

Removing the glasshouse would allow for a first-floor extension, which would house a new upper-level entrance and reception area to “improve the visitor experience.”

Design concepts for the new development are described as using “colour, texture and themes which tie back to both the landscape setting and historic hall.”

The first floor would utilise large glazing panels and timber to “enhance the lakeside setting” with the ground floor featuring more “dark and submerged spaces.”

Wynyard Hall continues to be an popular venue across the North East, with a 4.5 star rating on Google Reviews and praise for its "great" spa facilities and "relaxing" atmosphere.

Stockton Council will now make a decision on the development
