Middlesbrough woman threw glass at man in pub after argument

Rebecca Kent became embroiled in the argument as the pair traded insults while drinking in The Green Tree in Middlesbrough town centre.

CCTV footage from inside the pub, showed the 34-year-old climb onto her seat and start punching her victim after they had both thrown drinks over each other during the heated row.

Emma Atkinson, prosecuting, said staff and other customers tried to separate the pair before the defendant picked up a glass and threw it at the man.

“She called him a ‘m***’ and he told her to ‘do one’,” she said. “She then climbed on her seat and started hitting him.

“He managed to push her off but she continues to strike him. Other people try to get between the two parties.

“The defendant is shouting about her eye having had drink thrown in her face – she picks up the glass and throws it at him.

“You hear it smash, the glass ricochets causing the injury to him. You can immediately see blood on his face.”

Miss Atkinson said the injury needed ten stitches and the injured man had to return to hospital for treatment to his wound.

The court heard how the defendant was serving a community order sentence at the time of the incident.

Kent, of Cottingham Drive, Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm following the incident on June 10, 2022.

Michele Turner, mitigating, said her client has a longstanding problem with mental health but is starting to make progress on the community order.

Recorder Aisha Wadoodi sentenced Kent to six months in custody suspended for 12 months.

She said: “I could send you to prison and you couldn't complain because you have been offered a lot of help. I have to balance a lit of things.

"You can't keep behaving the way you have been behaving, normally it has been battery or common assault.

"If he had sustained more serious injury, there is no question that you would be going to prison for a very long time."

Kent was also resentenced for her previous conviction and made subject to a new three-year community order with conditions that she attends 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days and take part in a 12-month mental health treatment program.
