Wonderful weather and family fun was had by all at Eastgate’s sheep show last weekend.
On Saturday, June 1, more than 38 exhibitors presented their fleeced friends to judges for inspection in various classes.
The show has been a regular feature in the Weardale farming calendar for 37 years and is eagerly anticipated by hundreds of sheep breeders from across the North East.
Some of the classes judged included, Swaledale, Leicester, and Texel sheep. The continental classes were particularly well supported across the competition.
More than £3,000 was rewarded to champion entrants throughout the day, with 25 prize cups up for grabs.
Many of the woolly winners at Eastgate this year were home bred, including Swaledale’s female champion, a ewe presented by Patrick Sowerby and J Pratt. The male champion of the Swaledale class was named as Dan Humble, with Sean Proctor of Kirby claiming top spot in the Leicester class with his gimmer lamb.
Amongst the mules, Jack Buckle of Stainmore, was awarded the coveted prize, whilst M Collin of Teesdale’s entrant was decided the champion among the Blue Texel class.
Breed champion of the competition was won by Harry Askwith’s Beltex gimmer lamb who trotted away with the prize.

The Champion Texel was from the New View Flock of Messrs Teward in Staindrop - not only bringing home the cup for their class, but rising to become overall champion of the day.
As the sun finally came out and shone, show coordinator, Paul Collinson said: “It was a great day for everyone."
However, he did admit the stars of the day might not have agreed, adding: “It was a little hot for the sheep."
