Officers investigating a report of sexual assault in Newcastle city centre have identified a man they wanted to trace.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Between 10.30pm and 10.45pm on Friday, April 12, it was reported that a female victim had been sexually assaulted inside of a premises on Newgate Street.

"It was understood that a man had walked past the woman and hit her on the bottom as he was leaving.

"When challenged, the man has then grabbed the victim’s hand before leaving the area on foot."

The female victim was left shaken by the incident, which was later reported to police.

A number enquiries have been ongoing since the report was first made and officers earlier issued the photo of a man they would like to trace.
