An unexpected issue affecting drainage forced the closure of a County Durham leisure centre and school last night, it has been confirmed.

Consett Leisure Centre and the nearby Consett Academy announced late last night (June 3) that they were left with no choice but to close following the drainage problems and did not give an estimated re-opening time.

The centre confirmed the news last night on social media, stating the centre would be closed all day on Tuesday (June 4) apologising for any inconvenience caused.

No re-opening time has yet been announced as the council confirms the issue was due to drainage.

Alison Clark, Durham County Council’s head of culture, sport and tourism, said: “Due to an unforeseen issue with drainage affecting the toilets, we have had to temporarily close the leisure centre.

“We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and will update customers when the building reopens.”

The academy also confirmed the closure on social media last night, stating it was "out of (their) control".

They wrote: "Late this evening we have received news that there has been an issue with the leisure centre toilets that has impacted our building and as a result we will be closed tomorrow for all students other than Y11/13 who have an exam and exam slam.

"I realise this is late but it is out of our control and would ask that this message is shared as much as possible.

"I will then provide an update tomorrow with plans for Wednesday but appreciate your support and patience with this matter."
