A person has died after an incident at Chester-le-Street station in County Durham.
Police and paramedics were paged to the station on Monday evening after reports of a “casualty on the tracks” around 10.45pm.
Trains were ground to a halt between Newcastle and Darlington for several hours, with several services facing delays and cancellations. British Transport Police has since confirmed that a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
The force said the incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.

As previously reported, the event was brought to a conclusion around 2am, with affected services including between London Kings Cross and Sunderland, between Leeds and Aberdeen, and the Northern route between Darlington and Newcastle.
A full-force statement said: “We were called to Chester-le-Street station shortly after 10.45pm last night, Monday, June 3, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Officers attended along with paramedics but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
