New figures released today reveal that the North East could be left with just one Conservative MP after the next general election, according to a new poll.

Labour are set to sweep the North East and win all but one seat in July 4's general election according to the poll, which was carried out by YouGov.

The Conservatives are are expected to hold on to their seat North Northumberland but data from YouGov suggests it may be a tight vote between the Conservative Anne-Marie Trevelyan, and Labour’s David Smith, with the Tories coming out marginally on top.

The other seats in the North East that may also be lost to Labour according to the poll include Bishop Auckland and Darlington.

YouGov has said: "Nationally, Labour is projected to secure a landslide victory, increasing its number of seats from 202 in 2019 to 422 in 2024. The Conservatives are set to suffer significant defeats, securing just 140 seats across the country. This would be the fewest number of Conservative MPs since 1906.

"Most significantly, notable members of the party – including Grant Shapps, Penny Mourdant and Jacob Rees-Mogg – are projected to lose their seats. The traditional Tory heartlands of Maidenhead and Surrey Heath are going to be tightly fought between Conservatives and Lib Dems with their former Tory representatives standing down.

"However, this major setback to the Conservatives is mirrored in Scotland by the SNP, who are looking at losing over half their MPs, and taking just 17 seats.

"The Liberal Democrats are also set to benefit from the Tory collapse, with the party set to once again have the third biggest grouping in Westminster with 48 MPs, significantly overtaking the SNP."
