A man has been left with head and facial injuries after an assault in Darlington in the early hours of Sunday (June 2) morning, as the suspect remains at large. 

Emergency services were called to the incident at about 1.30am near Stonebridge on St Cuthbert’s Way, in the town.

A man in his thirties is believed to have been attacked by another man, who punched and kicked him in his face and head.

He has been taken to hospital for treatment.

Images from the scene show that police have cordoned off the bridge and River Skerne walkway towards St Cuthbert's Church and St Cuthbert's Way. 

Durham Police have launched an investigation into the incident, and are appealing for witnesses.

A spokesperson for the police force said: "Enquiries are ongoing to trace the suspect and police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident.

"If you can help, please call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 48 of June 2.

"Alternatively, information can be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
