The A1(M) is set to reopen this evening following a serious crash which saw one person taken to hospital.
The incident saw two cars collide on the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) between Chester-le-Street and Durham at 3:15am on Friday (May 31).
The road was closed both ways between junction 62 at Carrville and 63 at Chester-le-Street.
North East Ambulance Service confirmed they took said they took one person to hospital from the scene.
A Durham Police spokesperson said: “The A1(M) is due to reopen this evening following a serious collision earlier this morning.
“The incident happened at 3.15am today on the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) between Chester-le-Street and Durham and involved an Audi Q5 and a Peugeot 308.
“The road was closed in both directions between junction 62 at Carrville and 63 at Chester-le-Street for several hours while collision investigators worked at the scene.
“It is expected to reopen later this evening.
“We understand the disruption that this incident has caused and would like to thank people for their patience and cooperation while we worked at the scene.
“Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has any dashcam footage, is asked to contact Durham Constabulary’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 03.22am today (May 31) for a road traffic collision on the A1 southbound carriageway between Chester-le-Street and Durham.
"We dispatched three paramedic crews, a doctor, a paramedic duty officer and our hazardous area response teams to the scene. One patient was taken to hospital."
