Firefighters remain at the scene of a fire which broke out this evening at a derelict building.

Multiple fire engines and firefighters are still battling flames at the old bail house on Milbank Street in Middlesbrough.

It is understood the fire broke out just after 7pm, but its cause is currently unknown.

Cleveland Fire Brigade have said: "We are currently dealing with a derelict building fire in the South Bank area.

"We have two fire engines and an aerial appliance at the incident and we are tackling the fire defensively. Crews have done a fantastic job but will be on scene for a few more hours."

Footage taken by a witness shows firefighters fighting flames from above, into the roof of the building which has sustained extensive damage.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for several hours.
