The Met Office has predicted heavy showers, thunder and sunny spells for the North East today.

The forecaster said the region can expect showers to develop throughout the morning, with this turning heavy in places.

It added there was a chance of thunder this afternoon, while there would also be bright and sunny spells.

The forecaster added there would be isolated showers overnight.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Showers will readily develop through the morning, becoming heavy in places with a chance of thunder by afternoon.

“However, there will also be some bright or sunny spells mixed in.

“Light winds freshening in and around showers. Clear spells overnight. Isolated showers continue overnight, mostly in the west and heavy at times.

“A coastal breeze developing towards dawn.”

There will be a maximum temperature of 19 °C today, with the region expecting a minimum temperature of 10 °C tonight.
