Severe delays on the A1 near Gateshead are set to continue as lane closures remain in place on the road.

National Highways have confirmed significant delays are expected to continue this week as daytime lane closures and night-time full closures between J66 (Eighton Lodge) and J65 (Birtley) remain in place.

The J65 southbound exit slip will stay closed, with no access to the A1231 from the A1 southbound.

Non-motorway traffic will be diverted at J66.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “These closures are essential to ensure safety while we continue to repair and investigate the area.

“We will reopen the road fully as soon as it’s safe to do so.

“Our engineers continue to work onsite overnight and off site during the day to make sure the repair is carried out efficiently.
