There are severe delays on the A1 near Gateshead due to emergency closures on two lanes.
Two lanes have been closed as work continues on the J65 southbound and A1 Western Bypass southbound today (May 23).
National Highways announced the closures yesterday (May 22) and warned drivers “significant delays” would continue into today.
The road has been closed due to "a carriageway defect".
A spokesperson said: "Emergency closures on A1 southbound near Gateshead from J69 to J65 from 7pm.
"From 6am tomorrow J65 southbound will remain closed for ongoing investigations.
"Expect significant delays during peak times.
"Diversions in place. Updates to follow."

A spokesperson for AA road maps said: “Exit ramp closed, severe delays and two lanes closed due to emergency repairs on A1 Western Bypass Southbound at J65 A1231 (Birtley).
“Congestion to J70 (Dunston / Whickham turn off).”
They said travel times of one hour and fifteen minutes can be expected.
