Thirty rescuers were at the scene of a mudslide yesterday and tried for hours to save the life of a trapped person who was later tragically confirmed to have passed away.
Multiple emergency services including the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Cleveland Mountain Rescue and North Yorkshire Police rushed to the scene near Carlton Bank above Carlton-in-Cleveland yesterday (May 22) following reports of a mudslide.
Rescuers arrived to the disaster just after 1pm and worked throughout the afternoon.
A statement released today (May 23) by Cleveland Mountain Rescue reveals that dozens of volunteers were sent to the scene in a desperate attempt to save the life of one person caught in the slide.
It said: "During the early afternoon of Wednesday 22nd May 2024, Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team volunteers were called by the North East Ambulance Service to a report of a mudslide near to Carlton Bank above Carlton-in-Cleveland village, North Yorkshire.
"A very short time later they were also contacted by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service with a similar report.
"Nineteen Cleveland MRT members were deployed immediately, eventually rising to thirty at the scene during the course of the afternoon and working alongside their emergency service colleagues including the North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, in addition to the ambulance services.
"North Yorkshire Police have since confirmed that one person sadly died as a result of the incident.
"The thoughts of the mountain rescue volunteers are with the family and friends of the deceased during such a very sad time."

They said: "We are currently responding to a mudslide at Carlton-in-Cleveland.
"We can confirm that one person has sadly died as a result of the incident. Our thoughts are with their family and friends during this difficult time."
