Emergency closures have been put in place at junctions of the A1 near Gateshead.
The A1 southbound from J69 to J65 will be closed from 7pm.
The road will also be closed from 6am tomorrow at J65 due to ongoing investigations.
The road has been closed due to "a carriageway defect".
Lane 1 (of 2) is closed on the #A1M southbound within J65 (#Birtley) due to a carriageway defect. The J65 exit slip road is also closed.

Teams are on route to carry out emergency repairs.

National Highways have warned drivers that there will be "significant delays" tomorrow morning.
A spokesperson said: "Emergency closures on A1 southbound near Gateshead from J69 to J65 from 7pm.

"From 6am tomorrow J65 southbound will remain closed for ongoing investigations.
"Expect significant delays during peak times.
