LISTED Building Consent for a proposed replacement roof covering has been submitted to North Yorkshire Council for the Old School, West End, Middleham, Leyburn.
The School House is listed grade II and falls within the Middleham Conservation Area.
The School House was constructed in the mid-late 19th century and consists of a two-storey building with attic and centrally positioned three storey crenelated tower porch.

The building is of rubblestone construction with hammer dressed quoins, Welsh slate roof and stone copings with gable end chimneys.
The proposal seeks planning and listed building consent for the replacement of the Welsh slate roof with a Spanish slate.
The existing roof consists of a mixture of Welsh and Spanish slate to the roof. Repairs have been carried out and the roof re-laid, but incorrectly, prior to the purchase by Mr K Proctor & Ms C Kennedy.
These repairs include the use of galvanised nails rather than copper nails which should have been used.
Furthermore, the wrong size latts were fitted, leading to the latts splitting and the tiles chipping. There are grave concerns that a strong storm could lead to significant damage to the roof and the property itself due to water ingress.
