These seven drivers were all landed with points on their license this week and hefty fines after being caught speeding.

All seven appeared before Peterlee Magistrates' Court this week for various speeding offences.

Gemma Abigail, 39, appeared before magistrates on Tuesday (May 14) where she pleased guilty to speeding on the A66 in Galley Bank, in Barnard Castle last October. Abigail, of Evesham Way, Billingham, was driving a 57-plate Audi when she was caught going over 70 miles per hour. She was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £146 and landed with three points on her driving license.

Paul Andrews, 37, of Potters Loaning in Alston, Cumbria, was caught going over the 30mph speed limit on the A1150 in Darlington on October 18 last year. He was fined a total of £1,022 and given six penalty points on his license. He appeared before the court on Tuesday (May 14) morning.

Shona Bennett of Alwin, Washington, drove a 20-plate Mercedes at more than 30mph on the A693 in Chester-le-Street. The 43-year-old will have to pay a fines and costs totalling £277 and she had her license endorsed with four penalty points.

Christopher Bown, 65, of Longframlington, Morpeth was driving a Tesla when he was caught exceeding the 50mph speed limit on the A167 between Hermitage and Plawsworth in October 2023. He pleaded guilty and will have to pay fines totalling £202, as well as receiving three points on his licence.

Patrick Foley, 85, of Welldeck Road, Hartlepool was landed with three points on his license and fined a total of £230 after being caught going over 30mph on Thompson Street East in Darlington in an 11-plate Mercedes.

Dennis Hughes, 77, of Thornton Close, Ludworth, Durham was in court charged with speeding. He was caught going more than 30mph on Station Road in Shotton Colliery and was fined £56, plus costs and a victim surcharge. His license was endorsed with three penalty points.

Rebecca Smithson, 34, of Park Avenue in Coxhoe was driving a 12-plate Peugot on Fair View in Burnhope when she was caught going over 30mph. She was fined £660, and will have to pay a £264 victim surcharge and £90 costs, a total of £1,014. She also had six points put on her license.
