We asked our readers for their favourite fish and chip shops in the North East - here's where they recommended.

From Redcar to Seaham, Darlington to Stanley, our readers shone a spotlight on a host of fantastic chippys sprinkled across the region.

Whether you prefer yours smothered in gravy, swimming in curry sauce, doused in vinegar, or simply straight up, our readers' recommendations could be worth a try.

Coastal takeaways were popular with Wendy Atkinson leading the charge, raving over Sea Breeze in Redcar, a sentiment which followed by Shaun Smith who declared the chippy "amazing"

Sea Breeze wasn’t the only Redcar shop to earn a mention, with Oliver's also being singled out by Yvonne Mitchell and Milly Molly Mandy.

Elsewhere, Glenn Edgar, who claims to have sampled fish and chips "from Berwick to Scarborough and everywhere in between", said Verrell's at the Headland in Hartlepool as the best.

Coleman’s in South Shields also featured strongly with Emma Louise Woodhouse heralding it along with John Moore, and Downey’s in Seaham.

But it wasn't just coastal towns garnering recommendations.

Davey Jewison claimed Darlington's Yarm Road chippy is the best "all day long", while Gill Metcalfe agreed that the spot on Yarm road in Darlington is "the best by far".

Not all readers could settle on just one shop, however.

Carl Thompson listed a trio of his favourites: "Downey’s in Seaham, Ambleside in Seaham, Minchellas Seaburn and Ciccarelli Blyth".

With County Durham eateries featuring heavily in the readers' recommendations, it was clear that good quality fish and chips are in no short supply in towns and villages across the region.
