Tributes have been paid following the death of a leading figure in education from the North East.
Peter Shukar was principal of Darlington College of Technology
for 14 years before he stepped down in 2001.
His family has said he died peacefully at home at the age of 86.
Mr Shuker, who was born in Middlesbrough, was educated at Hugh Bell School, in the town, before attending Bradford University, where he studied traffic engineering and planning.
Mr Shuker was a senior manager at Cleveland Technical College and Leeds College of Building, becoming principal at the latter for five years.
During his 38-year career in further education he was at the forefront of national and international developments, heavily involved in the introduction of IT systems for education and computer-based access for learning.
He took Darlington from a cash crisis in 1991, through a £3m redevelopment in the mid-1990s and into record-breaking recruitment of students.
Peter played a crucial part in establishing the Northern Colleges Network, and recently retired as founder chairman of the National Information and Learning Technologies Association after ten years.
Current principal David Gartland said: “Darlington College are saddened to learn of the passing of our former principal and chief executive, Peter Shuker.
“Peter dedicated 14 years of service to the college.
“His impact was profound, shaping the college through its incorporation in 1993 and leaving a mark on its present form.
“Peter’s commitment extended beyond the college walls.

“His collaboration with the Army and Catterick demonstrated his dedication to community and education.
“Notably, he championed the establishment of a purpose-built childcare centre for staff and students at the old college site and Catterick, something that was extended when we moved to Haughton Road in 2006.
“Those fortunate enough to work alongside Peter will cherish their memories of his leadership, kindness, and unwavering passion for education.”
Mr Shuker was a dearly loved husband, dad and grandad.
His funeral is being held at Darlington Crematorium on Tuesday, May 28, at 12 noon.
