Voters across the North East headed to the polls today to elect mayors in the local elections - many bringing their pooches along to join the exercise of democracy.
Posting photos of dogs at polling stations has become a popular trend on social media with many sharing the moment under the hashtag #dogsatpollingstations.
According to guidance from the Electoral Commission, dogs, apart from assistance dogs, are not usually allowed inside as they can disturb voters.
But some were more flexible. Most dogs were happy, however, to faithfully wait outside while their owners cast their votes.
Dogs Trust posted some advice for dog owners.
In a post on X they said: 'Be prepared for queuing in any weather! If it's cold or wet, bring your dog's coat.
'Many polling stations allow dogs inside. If you're not sure your does take a voting buddy to watch them while you vote, or leave your dog at home.'
Here are a few photographs, along with posts on X from people across the North East.
