Revised plans for a filling station and convenience store on an eyesore site in Linthorpe have been given the nod.
The land on the corner of Burlam Road and Acklam Road stood derelict from 2017 following the closure of the Roseberry petrol station. In 2020 it made a Middlesbrough Council hitlist of 11 eyesore sites that the local authority wanted to see developed.
Last summer, a planning application was approved for a new petrol station and SPAR convenience store, which could boast a deli counter and butcher counter, along with car parking for customers, an ATM machine and electric vehicle charging bays.
Earlier this year, revised plans were submitted by the developer James Hall and Co, with “minor design changes”.
These revised plans, which have now been approved by the local authority, include relocation of the entrance lobby, an ATM machine and electric charging and disabled parking bays, and the removal of an electric sub-station, and work has begun on the site.

There were no proposed changes to car parking numbers or an increase in floor space in the store.
At the time of the original application, the developers said the petrol station and local convenience store would provide employment opportunities for up to 30 people, with 15 full-time and 15 part-time staff members.
In the council’s decision letter to the developers, principal planning officer, Peter Wilson said additional tree planting should be considered on the land of the former proposed substation, in the north east corner of the site.
