Asylum seeker has denied murder of Hartlepool pensioner

Ahmed Ali Alid repeatedly stabbed Javed Nouri before wandering the streets of Hartlepool where he stumbled across Terence Carney on his regular early morning walk.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the 45-year-old stabbed the pensioner to death with a kitchen knife.

Mr Carney suffered six stab wounds – three causing serious damage to his heart, lungs, and liver during the attack on October 15 last year.

John Elvidge KC, representing Alid, quizzed the defendant as he gave evidence in his trial.

The barrister asked: “Did you stab Javed Nouri?” Alid replied: “Yes.”

“Did you stab Terence Carney,” he asked. “Yes,” he replied.

“Do you appreciate that it was wrong to stab them,” he asked. “Yes,” he replied.

Mr Elvidge continued: “Did you intend to kill Javed Nouri?” The defendant replied: “No.”

“Did you intend to cause him really serious harm?” he asked. “No,” he replied.

The barrister asked: “Did you intend to kill Terence Carney?” The defendant replied: “No.”

“Did you intend to cause him really serious harm?” he asked. “No,” he replied.

Jurors had watched footage of the killing, which was captured on CCTV, where the pensioner could be heard screaming ‘No, no, no’ as the Moroccan stabbed him repeatedly.

Dr Nigel Cooper, a Home Office pathologist, said Mr Carney died as a result of significant blood loss predominantly caused by the stab to the heart.

Earlier in the trial, the Judge, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb DBE told the jury that the accused accepts the facts of the case but they will be asked to consider Alid’s state of mind at the time of the alleged offences.

The asylum seeker had been reported to police and housing managers as his behaviour became increasingly concerning when he carried a knife in the shared property, jurors had heard.

Alid, of Wharton Terrace, Hartlepool, denies he murdered the pensioner.

He also denies the attempted murder of his housemate and two charges of assaulting an emergency worker.

The trial continues.
