An information appeal has been launched by Police today (Monday, April 8) after dog dies due after illegal bike collision on County Durham cycle path. 

The incident took place on the Coast to Coast Sustrans track between Stanley and New Kyo on Sunday, March 31.

The dog was being walked by it’s owners on the popular cycle track when it was hit by an off-road bike riding illegally along the same path.

Today, Stanley Police have revealed that despite being rushed to the vets the dog sustained life threatening injuries and it later passed away.

Officers are now hoping to secure information regarding the identity of the rider of the off-road bike and anyone with any information is urged to come forward.

A spokesperson for Stanley Police said: “On the afternoon of Sunday 31st March 2024 at approximately 3:20pm an incident occurred on the Coast to Coast Sustrans track between Stanley and New Kyo.

“An off-road bike was riding illegally on the track at that time and the bike collided with a dog which was being walked by its owners.

“The dog was rushed to the vets but due to the injuries it sustained, it later sadly died.
