Looking for chippies offering the crispiest battered fish or saltiest chips in the North East?
We asked Northern Echo readers on Facebook what they thought were the best places for fish and chips in the area (and there were more than 500 comments).
Many places received multiple recommendations, so here's a breakdown of some of the best as voted for by you.
Some of the best places for fish and chips in the North East
Fields Fish Shop (Esh Winning)
Location: 4 Durham Road, Esh Winning, Durham, DH7 9NW
One place which received a majority of recommendations was Fields Fish Shop (Esh Winning), with one local commenting: “Field's Esh Winning, simply the best, cooked on coal fired range.”
Another added: “they are done over coals lovely girls are great as well the best.”
Fields Fish Shop which is one of the oldest traditional chippies around serves a variety of dishes from the classic haddock and cod, to garlic king prawns.
There are plenty of extras too, including spam fritters, garlic mushrooms, black pudding and more.
Middleton in Teesdale Fish and Chip Shop
Location: 49 Market Place, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Barnard Castle, DL12 0RJ
Another popular choice was Middleton in Teesdale Fish and Chip Shop.
A reader said: “Middleton in Teesdale fish and chip shop. The best there is x”
The traditional chippy was also crowned ‘supreme champion winner’ at the British Pie Awards this year for their minted lamb and potato pie.
Stephenson’s Market Plaice
Location: 6 South Street, Crook, DL15 8NE
This resident posted: “Stephenson’s Market Plaice…easily the best!”
“Stephenson’s Market Plaice…. The best,” agreed another.
One person also wrote: “Stephenson’s Market Plaice crook, food cooked to perfection, excellent service great staff and a bar so you can have a beer or wine with your food, and deserts are to die for.”
They also offer gluten-free fish and chips, as well as curry sauce.
Fish and Chips at 149
Location: 36 Galgate, Barnard Castle, DL12 8BH
The fish and chip shop at Barnard Castle was also highly praised by locals.
On its Facebook page, it says it is a “multi award winning Fish and Chip shop, committed to providing outstanding quality, service, sustainability and product.”
From fish, chips, mushy peas, homemade tartare sauce and scraps, there is plenty of chippy goodness to choose from.
Fish and Chips at 149 also offer gluten-free fish and chips.
Yarm Road Fish and Chips
Location: 366 Yarm Road, Darlington, DL1 1XL
Someone said: “Darlington ,Yarm Road chippy, came 2nd in National competition.”
Also crediting the fish and chip shop for their award, this person commented: “Yarm road darlington thats why they came second for best fish a d chip shop x”
It comes as Yarm Road Fish and Chips featured in the National Fish and Chip Awards 2024.
From battered crème eggs, fish butties, cod bites and scampi, there is bound to be something for everyone’s taste.
Cockerton Fisheries
Location: 311 Woodland Road, Cockerton, Darlington, DL3 9AA
“Cockerton Fisheries. Constant excellent quality. Pre-order and collect facility. Wouldn’t go anywhere else,” posted this reader.
“Best by a country mile,” a resident agreed.
Cockerton Fisheries provide a range of dishes from seafood baskets to battered sausage and “amazing” plaice.

The Harbour View
Location: 1-3 Beresford Road, Seaton Sluice, Whitley Bay, NE26 4DR
Many comments included recommendations for The Harbour View in Whitley Bay.
On its website, it explains: “We know that some of our customers travel the length and breadth of the UK for a table in our restaurant and sometimes others have to queue for takeaway fish and chips.
“There’s a reason for this. It’s pure and simply down to the quality, taste and size of the food portions that we serve.
“We never compromise on quality – ever.”
