Friends, family and neighbours gathered as a procession made its way through a North East town to say goodbye to a beloved teenager.

The community paid their respects to Lewis Penfold-Roche, 18, today (March 26) as a funeral procession moved from Cotswold Crescent, along Junction Road in Stockton, before arriving at Stockton Crematorium in Norton.

Lewis’s body was recovered from the Tees on March 11 after he had been missing since January 28.

Billingham and Stockton residents lined the streets on its route to pay their respects to the 18-year-old.

As the procession made its way towards the chapel, bagpipes were played to pay tribute to Lewis.

Residents were invited by the family to release a balloon for Lewis as the procession passed by, or throw a flower or confetti if they wished to pay their respects.

Many paid tribute to the Billingham teenager online and hoped he could now ‘fly high.’

One resident said: “Thinking of all of Lewis’ family and friends as they lay you to rest.

“Fly high Lewis, you were loved by so many people.”

Another resident, in a heartfelt tribute, said: “So glad the sun is shining to take Lewis on his final journey.

“Your family and friends will do you so proud today along with everyone else on here. You were cared about so much.”

While another resident said: “Thinking of everyone who loves Lewis today while he's taken on his final journey. I will be there on Station Road to pay my respects.

A vigil was held for Lewis on Sunday (March 24) as loved ones, friends, and the community gathered at John Whitehead Park to honour him.

As part of the tribute, a fireworks display and balloon release were held, while photos of Lewis were displayed in the park.
