With Northern Trains looking to recruit 300 train drivers and conductors across the North East this year, The Northern Echo has rounded up all the roles available in our patch.
There are roles available to suit all - with the train company advertising roles for those with no experience paying up to £54,000.
The train operator says the roles are part of a normal, ongoing process to recruit as and when existing staff members retire, earn promotions or join another company.
It is looking to hire 108 train drivers and 198 conductors in 2024 and say they are "actively encouraging" people with no rail industry experience to apply. Some positions are open in Darlington.
Recruits will have to complete paid apprenticeships at one of Northern’s training academies in Leeds or Manchester.
The train driver roles, which will be advertised in the coming months in Barrow-in-Furness, Blackburn, Blackpool, Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Workington and York, come with a starting salary of £23,000 a year rising to £54,500 after recruits complete a 64-week training course.
Conductor roles are set to be advertised in Barrow-in-Furness, Blackburn, Blackpool, Buxton, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle Skipton, Workington and York come with salaries starting at £22,000, rising to £29,000 once they complete a 16-week training course.
A small number of roles open to qualified drivers will also be available in Darlington, Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle.
Here are all the jobs available from Northern at the moment:
- Driver Team Manager - £64,702 to £67,158 per annum in year three.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with leadership experience and a passion for success."
- Performance Process and Insight Manager - £34,060 to £40,508 per annum. Northern Trains say: "We are seeking a Performance Process and Insight Manager to join our team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of our performance analysis and reporting capabilities, delivering insights that will inform strategic decision-making and support ongoing improvement initiatives."
- Revenue Insight Manager - £48,048 to £59,514 per annum. Northern Trains say: "We are looking for a dynamic and insightful person to join our Customer & Commercial team, as the Revenue Insight Manager. If you’re driven by challenges, passionate about data, and eager to make a tangible impact on Northern and our customers, then this role is for you."
- Technical Clerk - £25,848 rising to £31,872 per annum after 6 months. Northern Trains say: "We are looking for a Technical Clerk to work within our technical team to help us achieve high standards of organisation and have your opportunity to play your part in our brand-new future. That means contributing to our engineering objectives and staying flexible enough to deal with ever-changing demands, as our business continues to move quickly."
- Train Cleaning - Team Leader - Full Time (Night Shifts) - £24,677 per annum. Northern Trains say: "We are looking for reliable and hardworking individuals, who are willing to work outside and onboard our trains throughout the year to deliver spotlessly clean trains to our customers to join our team of Train Cleaners and lead them to success."
- Trainee Train Conductor - £24,081, rising to £30,848 per annum after training (approx 3 months). Northern Trains says: "We are looking for proactive and committed individuals to join our Trainee Train Conductor Apprenticeship, where you’ll receive interactive, informative and practical training to equip you in succeeding as a Train Conductor."

Trainee Train Driver - £23,576 per annum during training - approx. 12 months, Rising to £40,738 in Year 1, £44,952 in Year 2 and £54,500 in Year 3. Northern Trains says: "We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our Trainee Train Driver Apprenticeship, where you’ll receive immersive training and hands-on experience to become a fully qualified Train Driver."

Apprenticeship Development Coach - £34,060 to £40,508 per annum. Northern Trains says: "We are seeking a people-focused and collaborative person to join our Learning, Talent and Development Team as an Apprenticeship Development Coach. If you’re dedicated to inspiring and nurturing excellence in Northern’s Trainee Apprentices, then this role will offer a rewarding opportunity to you."

Assistant Procurement Manager (12 Months Fixed Term Contract) - £36,140 to £45,021 per annum. Northern Trains says: "We are looking for a detail orientated professional to help drive cost-effective solutions. Supporting the ongoing delivery of both services and works contracts in accordance with the strategic sourcing and procurement policies."
Tricia Williams, chief operating officer at Northern, said: “We have a range of rewarding roles for anyone who wants to become part of a dedicated team that runs more than 2,500 services a day to over 500 destinations.
