A video has emerged showing a group of young people – claimed to be students – running down a residential street in Durham naked.
The video, sent to The Northern Echo by Parkside residents Terry and Kevin Turrington, shows a group of men in formal wear – bow ties and waistcoats – gathering near Domino’s Pizza shop, on Sutton Street in the city’s viaduct area.
Suddenly, two naked runners come hurtling down the street, and touch the Domino’s door, before running back up Sutton Street towards Flass Street.
They are followed shortly by a third nude racer, who has to be directed around the makeshift 'course' by one of the suited men standing near the pizza shop. By this point, people have come out of their houses to watch the debacle.
The Turrington's say that the footage, taken at the end of February, shows an “organised, planned event”.
The couple claim that the group are Durham University students, and say that they have been subject to incidents like this for years, and originally invested in CCTV recording following repeated instances of “appalling behaviour”.
But a spokesperson for Durham University said: “We gave no way yet of establishing that these are indeed our students.”
Terry and Kevin say they are two of only a handful of residents left in the area, with most of the viaduct populated by houses in multiple occupations (HMOs).
Terry, 84, said: “Young people treat the city like it’s their playground, these are supposed to be the leaders of the next generation, but they’re behaving like this.”
Kevin added: “The students in this area think they can do anything. It’s a terrible thing to say, but I do believe we live in a student enclave. It wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t just think that they could do whatever they wanted.
“Students running down the street naked is laughable – but is still indecent exposure.”
Though the Turrington's say they have raised issues with the police and university, nothing has been done.
Terry said: “We’ve got enough complaint numbers to win a lottery.
“We’ve had things like this happen before; we’ve seen a rugby lad stark naked, carrying his clothes in his arms. But it’s like a desert – you ring and ring, but nothing is done.”
At points, Terry, who has lived in the house for 36 years, has been left wondering if they should “cut our losses” and sell up.
The couple have “nothing against students”, having had close relationships with young people from the university who have walked their dogs and come around for barbeques over the years.

Terry said: “I was a student, my sons were students, and we have had some lovely students over the years that still come back to visit us. But it is not acceptable that they are given the licence to do this.”
A spokesperson for Durham University said: “This matter has only just been brought to our attention by The Northern Echo. We are looking into it. We have no way yet of establishing that these are indeed our students. The facts have to be checked first.
“We urge anyone who witnesses such behaviour to contact the police.”
