Lanes of the A1 are set to be closed next weekend so works to remove part of a bridge can be carried out.
The south side of the road's Junction 66 roundabout will be shut from 8 pm on Friday, March 22, until 6 am on Monday, March 25.
This is part of the Birtley to Coal House redevelopment scheme.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: "This closure is so that we can remove a bridge beam above the roundabout which will in turn allow us to continue to widen the overhead bridges."
The National Highways project began road works to optimise traffic flow and enhance connectivity on the A1 between Birtley and Coal House.

Before the project, worries were mounting about the strain that would be put on the already busy road by nearby housing developments.
Both sides of the bridge are set to be widened to help traffic flow, in addition to the new Allerdene bridge which was opened in September of last year.
