Seven County Durham speeders have been fined in court this week after breaking the speed limits on roads in the county. 

All seven of the motorists appeared at Peterlee Magistrates' Court on March 5, where they were fined and handed penalty points on their licences - totalling £2000.

Here are those that appeared in court: 

Ian Batey, 37, from Fieldside, Pelton, Chester le Street, has been fined £115 after driving his Ford car over a 30mph limit.

The offence took place on August 14, 2023, on South Terrace, Low Jobs Hill in Crook.

In court, on March 5, 2024, Batey entered a guilty plea for the offence.

He was subjected to a £115 fine and his driving record was endorsed with three penalty points.

Batey must also contribute a £46 victim services surcharge and pay £90 in costs.

Michael Britton, 27, from The Fallows, Cockfield, Bishop Auckland has been fined after being caught driving his Audi over the speed limit.

Britton was caught speeding on August 12, 2023, on C18a Hargill Road, Howden le Wear.

Following his guilty plea, Britton was ordered to pay a £61 fine at the single justice procedure held on March 5, 2024.

Britton also had to pay a surcharge of £24 to fund victim services and £90 in costs. In total, Britton has until April 2, 2024, to pay the £175 sum. Britton's driving record was further endorsed with three points.

Lesley Eagleton, 59, from Linburn Beck, Hamsterley, was found guilty of exceeding the 30 mph speed limit.

Eagleton breached the limit on August 12, 2023, while driving her Mercedes on the A68 at High Etherley in County Durham.

Eagleton was ordered to pay a total of £295, comprising of a £147 fine, a £58 surcharge to fund victim services, and £90 in costs.

The court also endorsed her driving record with three penalty points.

Lee Hornsby, 47, of Durham Animal Feeds in Windlestone Park, Ferryhill, was clocked exceeding the 70 mph limit.

He was fined £140 and ordered to pay an additional £56 to fund victim services and £90 in costs.

Hornsby committed the offence on August 13, 2023, whilst driving his Land Rover between Junction 59, Aycliffe, and Junction 60, Bradbury, Durham, a section of the A1(M) motorway.

He was given three penalty points which will be endorsed on his driving record, and Hornsby's fine must be paid by April 2, 2024.

Rachel Elizabeth Kirton, 46, from Elmdene, in Morley, Cockfield, was clocked driving at a speed above the 30 mph limit along a stretch of C18a Hargill Road in Howden le Wear, County Durham.

The incident occurred on August 12 and was captured using manned equipment.

On March 5, 2024, the single justice procedure court heard that Kirton had pleaded guilty to the offence.

The court fined Kirton £294 and ordered her to pay a £117 surcharge to fund victim services alongside costs of £90. 

Kirton's driving licence was not suspended but received five penalty points, and the DVLA was informed of her conviction.

Laura Marshall, 39, of Eamont Gardens, Hartlepool, was recorded speeding on a stretch of the A66 Bowes Moor, Barnard Castle in County Durham on August 13, 2023.

Appearing in a single justice procedure on March 5, 2024, Marshall pleaded guilty and was fined £170.

She was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £68 to fund victim services and £90 in costs, totalling £328.

Her driving record was also endorsed with three points.

A Durham driver was fined £440 for exceeding a 30 mph speed limit on a restricted road in Trimdon Grange.

Lisa Nicholson, 34, of Victoria Terrace, Trimdon Colliery, Trimdon Station, was caught speeding over the 30 mph limit on August 14, 2023.

Nicholson committed the offence while driving her Mini on B1278 Salters Lane to Lillie Terrace, Trimdon Grange, Durham.

Nicholson was found guilty following a Single Justice Procedure that took place on March 5, 2024.

Besides the fine, the court ordered her to pay a £176 surcharge to fund victim services and £90 in costs.

A collection order for the total fine of £706 was made and payment is due by April 2.

Nicholson’s driving record was marked with four penalty points.
