From quaint cafes to trendy bistros, there's something for everyone in this region's vibrant dining scene.
The OpenTable appreciates a relaxing weekend meal, and has identified the Top 100 spots for brunch and Sunday lunch nationwide - so The Northern Echo has pulled together all of the top spots in the North East for a weekend feast.
Hard Rock Cafe – Newcastle upon Tyne
Sited in the historic Guildhall town court, this cafe is a bit of an unconventional choice for a Sunday lunch - though are well known for their American-style brunches. Like other Hard Rock Cafe's across the world, this restaurant offers an American fare, alongside local brews or signature cocktails.
Hinnies Restaurant – Whitley Bay
Hinnies is known for a "relaxed, warm and friendly" atmosphere, serving comforting, rustic and hearty Geordie-influenced classics made from scratch using local and seasonal produce.
Jolly Fisherman at Craster – Craster
Stunning views and stunning food welcome guests at the Jolly Fisherman, in Craster. Home-cooked food - such as their famous crab soup; Craster landed lobster; steak, ale and mushroom pie; and North Shields dressed crab are served alongside ales in the charming historic Northumberland pub.
Kiln – Newcastle Upon Tyne
Kiln is a small restaurant in the heart of the Ouseburn, which offers brunch (many of their dishes have a Middle Eastern influence) as well as hand-thrown ceramics for trade and retail.
No. 59 Restaurant @ Townhouse – Morpeth
A characterful fine dining experience can be found at No. 59, the original three-storey building, which dates back to the mid-1800s, stands proudly just over Telford Bridge on the River Wansbeck in Morpeth – a grand feature of the historic market town. They serve up Northumbrian heart and soul in a menu which is rich with northern classics and the finest steaks.
The Engine Room – Sunderland
Sitting inside the lovingly restored Old Fire Station, within the heart of Sunderland’s cultural quarter the Engine Room is the perfect place to enjoy a brunch or lunch this weekend. Serving up great quality food, produced from fresh and locally sourced produce.
The Joiners Arms – Alnwick
The Joiners Arms is a five star village pub and inn that is located within the very heart of Newton-by-the-Sea. Delivering fantastically crafted country food and drink, the Joiners Arms is a perfect spot for a bit of cozy respite.
The Woodmans Arms – Whickham
A multi-award-winning family-owned pub and restaurant is situated in the scenic town of Whickham, on the outskirts of Newcastle upon Tyne, the Woodmans Arms serves up "food from the heart". You can expect classic but upmarket pub grub if you call in at the Woodmans Arms.

Known as "Harrogate's favourite pub", The Fat Badger serves up a brilliant Sunday roast with all the trimmings, as well as pub classics, small plates, pizzas and steaks from the chargrill.
The Star Inn The City – York
This buzzy all-day brasserie sits within an old brick-built engine house and boasts a lovely terrace overlooking the river - and is featured in the Michelin Guide, no less.
